Union Pacific’s 25 4-8-8-4-type Big Boy steam locomotives worked in heavy freight service on the railroad’s transcontinental route between North Platte, Neb., and Ogden, Utah. They are widely regarded as the largest steam locomotives ever built. Seven are preserved.
