The railroad dates to the original transcontinental railroad in the late 19^th century. In the 1980s and 1990s it greatly expanded acquiring the Missouri Pacific and Western Pacific (1982), Missouri-Kansas Texas (1988), Chicago & North Western (1995), and Southern Pacific (1996) leading to the route structure shown on this map. It hosts Amtrak’s Coast Starlight and Sunset Limited.
