PT Boats

David Doyle

SKU: 85232
$19.99

David Doyle examines the fast, maneuverable, and heavily-armed patrol boats that were part of virtually every navy during World War II in this title from the Legends of Warfare series.

Fast, maneuverable, and heavily armed, torpedo-armed patrol boats became a part of virtually every navy during World War II. The U.S. Navy PT, for Patrol Torpedo, boats moved through several versions on the way to operational status, and in the end more than 500 were built.

That evolution is the subject of David Doyle's PT Boats — The US Navy's Fast Attack Patrol Torpedo Boats in World War II, part of Schiffer's Legends of Warfare Naval series. Over the course of the hardcover's 128 pages, Doyle examines the Navy's requirements and resulting vessels from Elco, Huckins, the Navy Yard, and Higgins. After a look at the various early boats, extended chapters tackle the Elco 77-foot and the Higgins 78-foot boats and, the dominant type, the Elco 80-foot boats. A short chapter looks at the smaller production runs of PT boats built by Huckins and Canadian Powerboats.

The bulk of the book is taken up by beautifully reproduced photos that reveal a wealth of detail about the boats, including fittings, armament, and camouflage. Most are wartime images shot at the factories and in service. There are also photos of several surviving museum boats. All of this makes this book a great resource whether you are building Italeri's 1/35 scale PT boats, Revell's 1/72 scale kit, or any of the others on the market.
